Banking on learning

Fiona Hyslop MSP, children and creators at Money Minefield launch

A learning resource has been created to help users manage their cash.

The Money Minefield game was developed by West Lothian Credit Union Forum and West Lothian Adult Basic Education who aimed to create a resource that would encourage learners to start thinking and talking about money management, whilst having a bit of fun.

The game has been designed to be used with small groups of learners of all ages, from primary school children to adults. One hundred copies of the game have been produced to be used by school and community groups throughout West Lothian.

The Money Minefield game was launched on at St Margaret's Academy last week (25 September) where guests, including Cabinet Secretary for Education, Fiona Hyslop, got a chance to see the game for the first time.

Executive councillor for culture and leisure, Jim Walker, said: "Money Minefield may be a game, but it promotes a very serious message about how best to manage money.

"Many people don't have the financial awareness to ensure they make informed decisions about money and this resource aims to help them feel more comfortable about making decisions.

"Given today's economic climate, we need to do all we can to ensure that everyone has the skills, knowledge and understanding to manage their money."

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop, said: "We all need to be able to understand how to manage the money we have, learn how we can maximise our income where required and know when and how to get advice and support if needed.

"Money Minefield will support the work already underway in our schools and through the work of organisations such as West Lothian Council's Adult Basic Education service and the West Lothian Credit Union Forum to improve financial education and help people of all ages to learn how to improve their money management in a fun but effective way."
